LAIs: Evaluating in-situ forming gels without animals

SCISSOR has successfully been used to test and compare in-situ forming gel formulations in vitro without using animal data. Here are the 3 questions our customers ask most frequently about In-situ forming gels:

  • How will my in-situ forming gel behave?
    • That is for you to find out with our system! We’ve had experience with a variety of in-situ forming gels so far, many having similar mechanisms of release whilst others differed significantly. We’ve seen injections which form semi-solids, injections which ‘swell’ overtime and injections which do nothing.. but that’s the point. We use the SCISSOR to try out the different excipients we may want to add and see how this impacts the behaviour upon and after injection.
  • What volume do you inject?
    • Due to the system’s size, we tend to inject smaller volumes to allow for full surface area contact with our injected sample, meaning volumes below 0.5 mL are ideal, also sparing the sample during those early stages of development!
  • Can we see the depot after injection?
    • Yes! Our cameras capture images during and after injection to monitor depot size, shape, and color, revealing key behavior that may be lost in vivo.
