Tissue Homogenization – What is it?
Tissue homogenization is a process, often used in the biotech industry, used to prepare tissue samples for further study, research, or development. The process involves the lysing – or breaking apart – of cells in order to release their contents. The type of cell being lysed often dictates the homogenization device or technique that is used to complete the task.
Tissue cells can be homogenized using a number of manual disruption techniques. One method involves running the tissue cells through a blender or other mixing device to create uniform, small cells. Cell walls can also be disrupted through the use of a mortar and pestle. Yet another technique involves the use of chemicals to rupture the cell walls. Through any of these techniques, the tissue cells can then be further processed in a centrifuge to separate them and extract the desired components.

High pressure homogenization can also be utilized to homogenize tissue cells. With this technique, multiple forces are used to disrupt the cell walls: Turbulence, cavitation, shear, and impact.
